Type 1 Diabetes

Have you been recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes?

Choosing to participate in a clinical trial is an important personal decision. We will try and help you to make this decision and see whether you could be a suitable candidate to participate in the Andromeda Biotech Phase III study. Before going into depth concerning our study, we would also like to provide you with some background information in order to guide you to make the right decision for you.

What is Type 1 Diabetes?

Diabetes occurs when your blood sugar, known as glucose is consistently at a level which is too high. In type 1 diabetes, also known as insulin-dependent diabetes and juvenile diabetes, your pancreas produces very little insulin or none at all.

Insulin is a hormone which allows the glucose to enter your cells in order to be used by your body and provide you with energy. Without the insulin, the glucose remains free in your blood and builds up over time causing damage to your heart, eyes, kidneys, and nerves.

What causes type 1 diabetes?

Insulin is produced by the beta cells in the islet tissue of the pancreas. In type 1 diabetes, the body’s immune system destroys these beta cells, which prevents the production of insulin causing the diabetes.

The Honeymoon Period

In some patients, further to receiving initial treatment for type 1 diabetes after diagnosis, there is a period of time for about a few weeks up to a few months when the pancreas is again able to produce insulin. This is often referred to as the "honeymoon period." At this time, you may need to take little or no insulin, depending on how much insulin the pancreas produces. Once the honeymoon period is over, you will need to take insulin for the remainder of your life since currently, the only treatment available for type 1 diabetes is insulin replacement therapy.

Diabetes Complications

With the progression of the disease and due to high blood sugar levels, over time diabetes can cause damage to the eyes (diabetic retinopathy), the kidneys (diabetic nephropathy), the nerves (diabetic neuropathy), and the heart (leading to heart attacks). Also, diabetes causes damage to the blood vessels which can then result in strokes and blockage of other arteries, particularly in the legs. The good news is that these complications may be prevented or delayed by keeping your blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible.

Treatment with DiaPep277®

DiaPep277® is a synthetic peptide made up of 24 amino acids derived from the sequence of the human heat shock protein 60 (Hsp60). The peptide modulates the immune system that leads to type 1 diabetes by diminishing or blocking the destruction of beta cells by the immune system. Treatment of type 1 diabetes with DiaPep277® may have several medical benefits including prevention of deterioration of the disease, improved metabolic control, reduction of diabetic complications, and reduction of daily insulin dose requirements.

Do you qualify to participate in the study?

In order to participate in the study, please answer the following questions:

1. Have you been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes within the last 5 months?
2. Are you between 20 and 45 years old?
3. Have you been taking insulin since receiving your diagnosis of type 1 diabetes?

If you answered yes to all the above questions, please kindly click below to find a study center in your area to request participation in the Phase III clinical study using DiaPep 277®.
